France may legalise online gambling
The French government has been threatened with legal action by the European Court of Justice and has conceded that it must open up its gambling market. However any liberalization would be limited to online sports betting and that any deregulation would not be done without conditions to protect the state monopoly Pari Mutuel Urbain.
French casinos have been lobbying for permission to open up their own online sites to target French players. The country's two largest operators, Barrière and Partouche, are getting increasingly nervous of the competition from non-French online gaming operators targeting the country. Negotiations between the casino groups and the government have already started.
