Manchester wins super-casino license
The City of Manchester has won the race for the new super-casino licence, beating regional rival Blackpool and the UK government's preferred location Greenwich in London. The Casino Advisory Panel recommended Manchester's bid, saying that it was particularly impressed by the greater promise of their submission, subject to parliamentary approval.
The super-casino will be built in East Manchester in a shock decision to the Blackpool and Millenium Dome bids, both of whom were regarded as the favourites.
Blackpool bid organisers pledged to continue the work in getting government approval for a super-casino license depsite that there are no further plans to approve more supercasinos in the 2007 parliamentary year.
The short-list of locations was announced in 2006 and these were:
* Wembley Stadium, Brent, London (since removed from consideration)
* The 02 (Millenium Dome), Greenwich, London
* Cardiff
* Blackpool
* Manchester
* Newcastle
* Sheffield
* Glasgow, Scotland
What is a super-casino?
By definition a 'super casino' will have a minimum customer area of 5000 square meters and at most 1250 unlimited-jackpot slot machines. A super-casino is a Vegas style and size casino.
