The Netherlands Proposes Tougher Online Gambling Laws
The Dutch Ministry of Justice has proposed new gambling regulations very similar to the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act in the United States. Under the new laws banks, credit card companies and other financial institutions could be held criminally liable if they aided Dutch gamblers in wagering at foreign sites. At present around thirty different countries target the 400,000 Dutch gamblers who take their wagering online.
The motive for the new legislation may be because of the potential threat to the state owned Holland Casino, which is losing customers to other, more lucrative competition sites. It has been reported that the Dutch government has been spending more money than usual promoting its state owned companies, in what is considered a direct contravention to the EU policy of free trade across borders.
